Full 3 Day Itinerary: Marrakech to Merzouga and Back
Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley
Your adventure starts early in the morning. Your driver will pick you up from your hotel in Marrakech, usually around 7:00 or 8:00 AM. An early start is important because today is a long and full travel day with several stops along the way.
The first part of the drive takes you through the High Atlas Mountains on the famous Tizi n’Tichka road. This mountain pass sits at over 2,200 meters above sea level. The road winds through the mountains with wide views of valleys, small Berber villages, and rocky peaks on every side. It is one of the most beautiful drives in all of Morocco.
After crossing the mountains, you arrive at Ait Ben Haddou a stunning ancient village built entirely from red mud and clay. This place is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been used as a filming location for famous movies and TV shows. You will walk through the narrow streets, climb to the top for a great view, and hear the long history of this remarkable place.
After your visit, continue to Ouarzazate for a short stop and lunch. Ouarzazate is called the Hollywood of Africa because so many films have been made here. You can visit the Taourirt Kasbah or simply enjoy the town.
In the afternoon, the road continues east through the Dades Valley. This valley is full of green palm trees, rose gardens, and beautiful red rock formations called the “monkey fingers.” The Dades Valley is also known as the Valley of Roses because local people grow roses here and make rose water and rose oil that are sold all over Morocco.
You will arrive at your hotel or riad in the Dades Valley area in the evening. Dinner and rest.
Overnight: Dades Valley
Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Rissani – Merzouga Sahara Desert
After breakfast, you continue your journey toward the Sahara Desert. Today is one of the most exciting days of the tour.
The first stop is Todra Gorge a narrow canyon with rock walls that rise up to 300 meters high on both sides. A calm river runs along the bottom. It is a beautiful and peaceful place to walk, take photos, and enjoy nature. Rock climbers also come here from all over the world.
After Todra Gorge, the landscape slowly changes from green valleys to flat, open desert plains. You pass through the small towns of Erfoud and Rissani, both known for their fossils, local markets, and traditional Berber culture. Rissani is also the birthplace of the Alaoui dynasty the royal family that still rules Morocco today.
In the late afternoon, you arrive in Merzouga the small village at the foot of the Erg Chebbi dunes. These dunes are some of the tallest in Morocco, reaching up to 150 meters high. The sand is warm and golden, and the light at this time of day is magical.
After checking in quickly and changing into comfortable clothes, you will meet your camel guide. You climb onto your camel and ride slowly into the dunes as the sun begins to set. The colors change from yellow to orange to deep red. It is one of the most beautiful moments you will ever see.
Your guide will bring you to your traditional Berber desert camp. The camp has comfortable tents, mattresses, and blankets. Dinner is served around a campfire, and after eating, local musicians play Berber music under a sky full of stars. The Sahara at night is completely silent and the stars are incredibly bright.
Overnight: Traditional Berber Desert Camp, Merzouga
Day 3: Merzouga – Todra – Dades – High Atlas Mountains – Marrakech
Wake up early before sunrise. Your guide will take you to climb a dune to watch the sun rise over the Sahara Desert. In the early morning, the desert is completely quiet. The light changes slowly from dark blue to pink to gold. It is a very special moment and one of the highlights of the whole tour.
After breakfast at the camp, ride the camels back (or walk if you prefer) to the guesthouse. Take a hot shower and get ready for the long drive back to Marrakech.
Today you drive back through the same beautiful landscapes you passed on the way here, but the return road takes a slightly different route. You pass through the Draa Valley or take the southern road depending on the time and conditions. Either way, the scenery is stunning.
You cross back over the High Atlas Mountains in the afternoon, passing through small mountain villages and enjoying wide valley views. As you come down from the mountains, the red city of Marrakech appears in the distance.
You will arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon or early evening, depending on the pace of the day. Your driver will drop you off at your hotel, and your 3 day desert tour comes to an end.
If you have energy left, Jemaa el-Fnaa Square is just a short walk away and is always lively at night with food stalls, musicians, and storytellers.
