Full 5 Day Itinerary: Marrakech to Merzouga and Back
Day 1: Marrakech – High Atlas Mountains – Ait Ben Haddou – Ouarzazate – Dades Valley
Your tour begins early in the morning with a pick-up from your hotel in Marrakech. Your driver will meet you at your door, usually around 7:00 or 8:00 AM. Starting early is important today because you have many beautiful places to see along the way.
The drive begins with the climb through the High Atlas Mountains on the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass. This is one of the most dramatic mountain roads in Africa. As you drive higher, the views open up over wide valleys and mountain ranges that stretch as far as you can see. Small Berber villages cling to the hillsides, and women in colorful clothes sell fruit and argan oil by the roadside.
After crossing the mountains, you arrive at one of the most iconic stops on any Morocco desert tour Ait Ben Haddou. This ancient fortified village is made of mud and clay and has been standing for hundreds of years. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has been the filming location for many famous movies and TV shows including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, and Lawrence of Arabia. You will walk through the narrow old streets, climb to the top for a wide view of the surrounding desert valley, and hear the fascinating story of this remarkable place.
After Ait Ben Haddou, continue to Ouarzazate a large desert city known as the gateway to the Sahara and the Hollywood of Morocco. You can stop here for lunch and visit the Taourirt Kasbah or the nearby Atlas Film Studios where many great films have been made.
In the afternoon, the road continues east through one of the most beautiful drives in Morocco the Dades Valley. This long valley is full of red rock formations, green palm trees, rose gardens, and ancient kasbahs. You will pass through small villages where local life moves slowly and peacefully.
You arrive at your hotel or riad in the Dades Valley area in the evening. Enjoy dinner and a good rest tomorrow is another exciting day.
Overnight: Dades Valley
Day 2: Dades Valley – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Rissani – Merzouga Sahara Desert
After breakfast, start the day with a visit to one of Morocco’s most dramatic natural wonders Todra Gorge. This narrow canyon has rock walls that rise up to 300 meters on both sides, with a shallow and clear river running quietly along the bottom. The gorge is only about 10 meters wide at its narrowest point, and standing inside it and looking up is truly impressive. It is a great place to walk, take photos, and enjoy the cool and peaceful atmosphere. Rock climbers from all over the world come here to climb the tall walls.
After Todra Gorge, the road continues east and the landscape slowly changes. Green valleys give way to flat, open, semi-desert plains. You pass through the small town of Erfoud, known for its fossils and traditional date palms, and then through Rissani, an old trading town that was once an important stop on the trans-Saharan caravan routes. Rissani is also historically important as the birthplace of the Alaoui dynasty — the royal family that rules Morocco today.
In the late afternoon, you finally arrive in Merzouga — the small village at the foot of the famous Erg Chebbi dunes. These are some of the tallest sand dunes in Morocco, reaching heights of up to 150 meters. The sand is warm and golden and the light at this time of day turns everything a deep orange and red.
After a quick stop at your guesthouse to freshen up, you meet your camel guide. You climb onto your camel and ride gently into the dunes as the sun begins to set over the Sahara. The silence is complete. The colors are extraordinary. This is one of the most beautiful moments in all of Morocco.
Your camel guide brings you to your traditional Berber desert camp. The camp has comfortable tents with mattresses and blankets. Dinner is cooked fresh and served around an open fire. After eating, local musicians play traditional Gnawa and Berber music under one of the clearest and most star-filled night skies you will ever see in your life.
Overnight: Traditional Berber Desert Camp, Merzouga
Day 3: Full Day in the Sahara Desert – Merzouga
This is the day that makes the 5 day tour special. While the 3 day tour leaves the desert the morning after arrival, this tour gives you a full extra day to enjoy the Sahara Desert properly without rushing.
Start the morning by waking up before sunrise. Climb a dune near the camp and watch the sun rise slowly over the Erg Chebbi. In the early morning the desert is completely silent. The sky goes from dark blue to pink to gold. It is a moment of pure peace and beauty that many travelers say is the highlight of their entire trip to Morocco.
After sunrise and breakfast at the camp, you have the whole day free to enjoy the desert at your own pace. Here are some of the things you can do:
- Take a 4×4 tour around the dunes and through the desert landscape
- Try sandboarding sliding down the tall dunes on a wooden board
- Ride a quad bike through the desert (available at extra cost)
- Visit the small village of Khamlia and listen to traditional Gnawa music performed by local musicians
- Meet a nomad family living in the desert and learn about their way of life
- Simply relax in the desert, read a book, and enjoy the quiet and the space
In the afternoon, you can also visit the small Merzouga village itself, explore the local market, try traditional Moroccan tea with a local family, or watch people make bread in a traditional clay oven.
Tonight you sleep again in the desert or move to a comfortable guesthouse in Merzouga depending on your preference.
Overnight: Desert Camp or Guesthouse, Merzouga
Day 4: Merzouga – Draa Valley – Agdz – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou
After breakfast, you say goodbye to the Sahara Desert and begin the journey back toward Marrakech. Today you take a different route from the one you used on the way to the desert, so everything you see is new.
The road south from Merzouga passes through wide open desert plains before climbing into the southern slopes of the Anti-Atlas Mountains. The landscape is raw and beautiful — red and orange rock, dry riverbeds, and the occasional palm oasis that appears suddenly in the middle of the desert like a green jewel.
You enter the Draa Valley the longest river valley in Morocco. This valley stretches for hundreds of kilometers and is lined with date palm trees, ancient kasbahs, and traditional mud-brick villages that have barely changed in centuries. The contrast between the green river valley and the dry desert on both sides is stunning. Many travelers say this is one of the most beautiful drives in Morocco.
You pass through the small town of Agdz, where you can stop for lunch and take a short walk through the old kasbah and the palm groves nearby.
In the late afternoon, you arrive back in the Ouarzazate area. If you did not have enough time to explore Ait Ben Haddou properly on Day 1, this is a great opportunity to visit again at a slower pace or simply to watch the light change on the old mud walls as the sun goes down.
Overnight: Ouarzazate or Ait Ben Haddou area
Day 5: Ouarzazate – High Atlas Mountains – Marrakech
After breakfast, you begin the final drive back to Marrakech. Today’s road takes you back over the High Atlas Mountains via the Tizi n’Tichka Pass the same dramatic mountain road you crossed on Day 1, but this time you see it from the other direction and in different light.
The drive through the mountains is full of beautiful views, winding roads, and small Berber villages where you can stop for tea, shop for handmade souvenirs, or simply enjoy the fresh mountain air. Argan oil cooperatives are common along this road and worth a quick stop you can see how argan oil is made and buy some to take home.
As you come down the northern slopes of the Atlas Mountains, the red earth and palm trees of the Marrakech region appear ahead. The city comes into view and the energy begins to pick up again after the peaceful quiet of the desert and mountains.
You will arrive in Marrakech in the afternoon. Your driver will drop you off at your hotel or riad, and your 5 day desert tour from Marrakech to Merzouga comes to an end.
If you have some time before your flight or next journey, the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa Square is always alive with activity — food stalls, street performers, musicians, and the unique energy that makes Marrakech one of the most exciting cities in the world.

The biggest difference between this tour and a shorter 3 day trip is simple time. With 5 days, you are not rushing from place to place. You get to sleep two nights in the desert area, which means you experience both the sunset AND a full extra day in the Sahara. Most travelers who do the 3 day tour say they wished they had more time in the desert. This tour solves that problem.
You also get to travel back through the Draa Valley one of the most beautiful parts of Morocco that many travelers miss because they take the same road both ways. With 5 days, you see more of the country and come home with a much richer experience.
The tour is fully private. Your vehicle, your driver, your schedule. You can stop when you want, linger where you love, and move on when you are ready. There are no shared buses and no large groups telling you when to go.
