Full 5 Day Itinerary: Fes to Marrakech via Sahara Desert
Day 1: Fes City Tour – Medina – Tanneries – Madrasas
Your tour begins right in Fes with a full guided walking tour of the old medina. Before you leave the city, it is worth spending proper time exploring this incredible place. Fes el-Bali the old walled city is one of the best-preserved medieval cities in the entire world and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Your local guide will take you into the heart of the medina, where the narrow streets are barely wide enough for two people to walk side by side. Donkeys carry goods through the lanes just as they did hundreds of years ago. There are no cars here — the medina is completely car-free, and that is what makes it feel so timeless and special.
One of the most famous stops is the Chouara Tannery the oldest working leather tannery in the world. From balconies above the tannery, you can look down at dozens of large circular stone vats filled with different colors of natural dye. Workers stand inside the vats, stamping and softening the animal skins by hand. The colors saffron yellow, poppy red, mint green, and indigo blue are vivid and beautiful. It is one of the most photographed and most memorable sights in all of Morocco.
You will also visit the Al-Attarine Madrasa, built in the 14th century as a school for students of the nearby Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque the oldest university in the world. The interior of this madrasa is breathtaking. Every surface is decorated with hand-carved plaster, painted cedar wood, and tiny colorful mosaic tiles arranged in complex geometric patterns. It feels like a palace.
Other stops in the medina include the Bou Inania Madrasa, the ancient copper and spice markets, the wood carvers’ souk, and the old fondouks traditional merchants’ inns where craftsmen still work today just as they did centuries ago.
In the afternoon, after the Fes tour, you leave the city and begin driving south. You will not go far today just enough to get out of the city and enjoy the fresh air of the countryside before stopping for the night.
Overnight: Ifrane or Azrou area
Day 2: Middle Atlas Mountains – Azrou – Ifrane – Midelt – Ziz Valley – Merzouga
Today is a long and beautiful drive south through some of the most stunning landscapes in Morocco. Every kilometer brings a new view and a new feeling.
You start the morning in the Middle Atlas Mountains, a green and peaceful mountain range that feels very different from the dry desert landscapes of the south. The air is clean and cool, pine and cedar forests cover the hillsides, and small Berber villages appear on every ridge.
The first stop is Azrou a small mountain town surrounded by a large cedar forest. This is where you will see the famous Barbary macaque monkeys. These gentle wild monkeys live freely in the cedar trees and often come down to the roadside where travelers stop. They are completely wild but very used to people. Watching them play in the trees and on the rocks is a fun and unexpected wildlife experience that most travelers especially children absolutely love.
Next, you pass through Ifrane a town that surprises almost every first-time visitor. It looks completely different from anywhere else in Morocco, with clean wide streets, red-roofed European-style buildings, and well-kept parks. In winter it gets snow, and the whole area looks like a small Alpine town. People call it the Switzerland of Morocco.
As you continue south, the landscape gradually changes. Green mountains give way to rocky brown hills, and then to flat open plains. You pass through Midelt a quiet town known for its apples and fossils and then begin the descent into the spectacular Ziz Valley.
The Ziz Valley is one of the great natural wonders of Morocco. A long, narrow gorge opens up below the road, and inside it thousands of date palm trees grow along the banks of the Ziz River. The contrast between the green palms, the blue sky, and the dry rocky mountains all around is absolutely stunning. Small traditional villages made of mud brick sit at the base of the valley, almost invisible against the rock they are built from.
After the valley, the road flattens out into true desert territory. The ground becomes sandier and drier. Small dunes begin to appear by the roadside. And then, suddenly, the massive orange dunes of Erg Chebbi appear on the horizon rising up to 150 meters from the flat desert floor. You have arrived in Merzouga.
Check in quickly at your guesthouse, change into comfortable clothes, and meet your camel guide. As the sun begins to drop, you climb onto your camel and ride slowly into the golden dunes. The sky turns orange, pink, and then deep red. The desert is silent. The sand is warm under the camel’s feet. This is the moment that most travelers say they will never forget for the rest of their lives.
You arrive at your traditional Berber desert camp just as the last light leaves the sky. Dinner is served around a campfire, and Berber musicians play traditional music while the stars slowly fill the night sky above you. There are no city lights out here. The Milky Way is clearly visible. It is one of the best stargazing experiences in all of Africa.
Overnight: Traditional Berber Desert Camp, Merzouga
Day 3: Merzouga Sunrise – Desert Activities – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley
Set your alarm early. Before sunrise, your guide will take you to the top of a nearby dune to watch the sun come up over the Sahara. The sky changes slowly from black to deep blue to soft pink to bright gold. The silence is total. The views are endless. It is a moment of real peace and beauty that is impossible to describe properly in words.
After the sunrise, ride the camels back to the guesthouse, take a hot shower, and enjoy breakfast. You have a little time in the morning to do optional activities in and around Merzouga before leaving:
- Try sandboarding sliding down the tall dunes on a board
- Take a 4×4 tour into the deeper desert and surrounding palmeries
- Visit Khamlia village and listen to live traditional Gnawa music
- Meet a nomad family living in the desert and share tea with them
- Ride a quad bike across the dunes (available at extra cost)
After your morning in Merzouga, you begin the drive west. The first major stop is Todra Gorge a narrow canyon carved by the Todra River through the High Atlas Mountains. The rock walls on both sides rise up to 300 meters high and are only about 10 meters apart at the narrowest point. Standing inside the gorge and looking up at the towering orange and pink rock walls is an extraordinary experience. A clear shallow river runs along the bottom, and the sound of water echoing off the high walls makes the place feel peaceful and magical.
After Todra Gorge, you continue into the Dades Valley one of the most beautiful drives in all of Morocco. The valley stretches for many kilometers and is lined with ancient kasbahs, rose gardens, almond trees, and dramatic red rock formations. The most famous of these are the Dades Fingers tall twisted rock columns that rise from the valley floor and look like giant stone hands reaching up to the sky. They are a great photo stop and a very unusual natural sight.
You arrive at your hotel in the Dades Valley area in the evening for dinner and rest.
Overnight: Dades Valley
Day 4: Dades Valley – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – Draa Valley
After breakfast, you continue west through the southern Morocco landscape toward Ouarzazate the gateway to the Sahara Desert and one of the most well-known filming locations in the world.
Along the way you pass through the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs a long stretch of road through the Draa and Dades valleys dotted with ancient mud-brick fortress villages called kasbahs. Many of these are hundreds of years old and still inhabited by Berber families. The landscape here is dramatic and wide — red earth, palm trees, and flat-topped mountains stretching to the horizon.
In Ouarzazate, you can visit the Taourirt Kasbah a large and impressive mud-brick palace that was once the home of the Glaoui family, the powerful Berber lords who controlled southern Morocco in the early 20th century. You can also visit the famous Atlas Film Studios, where blockbuster films and TV shows like Gladiator, Lawrence of Arabia, and Game of Thrones were filmed. The desert landscape around Ouarzazate is perfect for big film productions, which is why filmmakers keep coming back.
After Ouarzazate, a short drive brings you to Ait Ben Haddou without doubt one of the most beautiful and dramatic places in all of Morocco. This ancient fortified village or ksar — is built entirely from red mud and clay and sits on a rocky hill above a dry river bed. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has appeared in more films and TV shows than almost any other place in Africa.
You will walk across the river and into the old ksar, climbing through narrow winding streets past old homes, granaries, and towers. At the top of the hill there is a small fortress with panoramic views over the valley, the river, and the surrounding desert landscape. In the late afternoon light, the mud walls glow a deep golden red. It is a spectacular sight.
You will stay tonight in the Ouarzazate or Ait Ben Haddou area, enjoying a quiet evening in this beautiful southern setting.
Overnight: Ouarzazate or Ait Ben Haddou area
Day 5: Ait Ben Haddou – High Atlas Mountains – Tizi n’Tichka – Marrakech
After breakfast on your final morning, you begin the last stretch of the journey to Marrakech. Today’s drive takes you over the magnificent High Atlas Mountains via the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass one of the most beautiful mountain roads in Africa.
The road climbs steadily from the dry southern plains into the heart of the High Atlas. As you go higher, the views get wider and more dramatic. At the top of the pass over 2,200 meters above sea level you can stop and look out over a vast mountain landscape stretching in every direction. In winter there is snow here. In spring the hillsides are green and full of wildflowers. In summer the light is sharp and clear. Whatever time of year you visit, the Tizi n’Tichka is always impressive.
On the way up and down the mountain, you pass through small Berber mountain villages where women in traditional dress sell homemade bread, argan oil, and woven blankets by the roadside. These are real working communities that have lived in these mountains for generations. Stopping to buy a small item or simply to say hello is a genuinely warm and human moment that many travelers remember long after the trip is over.
As you come down the northern slopes of the Atlas, the wide flat plain of Marrakech opens up before you. Palm trees appear, the earth turns red, and the city begins to come into view. After five days of mountains, deserts, valleys, and ancient cities, arriving in Marrakech feels like a perfect ending.
Your driver will drop you off at your hotel or riad in Marrakech, and your 5 Day Morocco Tour from Fes comes to a wonderful end.
If you have time before your flight or next destination, Marrakech rewards exploration. The famous Jemaa el-Fnaa Square is just minutes from most riads in the medina, and the winding souks around it are full of color, sound, and life. The Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs, and the Majorelle Garden are all well worth a visit if you have an afternoon free.
