Full 5 Day Itinerary: Tangier to Marrakech
Day 1: Tangier – Tetouan – Chefchaouen
Your tour begins in Tangier one of Morocco’s most fascinating and historic cities. Sitting at the very northern tip of Africa, just 14 kilometers across the water from Spain, Tangier has always been a place where two worlds meet. For centuries it was an international zone visited by writers, artists, diplomats, and traders from across the globe. Today it is a lively, modern city with a rich and layered history.
Your English-speaking driver will pick you up from your hotel or from the ferry port in the morning. Before leaving the city, you will visit the Kasbah of Tangier — a beautiful old fortress that sits high on a hill above the city. From the Kasbah walls you can look out over the Strait of Gibraltar and clearly see the coast of Spain on the other side. It is a striking view and a very unique moment standing in Africa looking at Europe across a narrow strip of blue water.
You will also walk through the old medina of Tangier, which has a very different character from the medinas of Fes or Marrakech. It feels more Mediterranean and relaxed, with wide lanes, painted doorways, and a mix of Arabic and European influences everywhere you look.
After Tangier, the road heads south along the northern coast through Tetouan a beautiful white city with a UNESCO-listed medina that looks more Andalusian than Moroccan. You do not need a long stop here, but driving through gives you a feel for the distinct character of northern Morocco.
From Tetouan, the road climbs into the Rif Mountains. The landscape changes quickly flat coastal land gives way to green forested hills, winding roads, and cool mountain air. Small villages with red-tiled roofs appear on the hillsides. After two to three hours of beautiful driving through the mountains, you arrive in Chefchaouen.
Chefchaouen is one of the most famous and most photographed towns in all of Africa. Almost every building in the old part of town is painted in shades of blue from pale powder blue to deep rich cobalt. The effect is extraordinary. Walking through the narrow medina streets feels dreamlike, especially in the late afternoon when the light softens and the blue walls glow.
Check in to your hotel and spend the rest of the afternoon and evening exploring the medina at your own pace. Sit in the main square Plaza Uta el-Hammam with a mint tea, watch local life go by, browse the small shops selling handwoven blankets and local crafts, and simply enjoy being in one of the most beautiful places in Morocco.
Overnight: Chefchaouen
Day 2: Chefchaouen – Volubilis – Meknes – Fes
Wake up early and take a morning walk through the blue medina before the town gets busy. Chefchaouen in the early morning is completely different from the middle of the day quiet, misty, and incredibly peaceful. Have breakfast at a rooftop cafe with views over the medina and the mountains behind.
After breakfast you leave Chefchaouen and begin the drive toward Fes. Today you pass through two of the most impressive historical sites in northern Morocco.
The first stop is Volubilis the best-preserved ancient Roman ruins in Morocco and one of the most impressive archaeological sites in all of North Africa. This Roman city was founded over 2,000 years ago and was an important regional capital of the Roman Empire. Today you can walk through the old streets, stand under tall stone arches, and look at stunning mosaic floors that are still in their original positions after more than two thousand years. The mosaics show dolphins, hunting scenes, mythological figures, and beautiful geometric patterns all remarkably clear and detailed. Volubilis is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the highlights of any Morocco tour.
After Volubilis, you drive to Meknes one of Morocco’s four imperial cities. Meknes is often called the forgotten imperial city because it gets fewer tourists than Fes and Marrakech, but it is absolutely worth visiting. The city was built by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century, who wanted to create a city as grand and impressive as the palace of Versailles in France. The result is a city full of massive walls, grand gates, and wide royal squares.
The highlight of Meknes is the Bab Mansour Gate widely considered one of the most beautiful city gates in all of North Africa. It is enormous, covered in intricate geometric zellige tilework and carved marble columns, and it stands at the entrance to the old imperial city like a statement of power and beauty. The old medina of Meknes behind the gate is lively and authentic, with local shops, food stalls, and craftsmen working in traditional ways.
In the afternoon you arrive in Fes the spiritual heart of Morocco and one of the oldest and most important cities in the Islamic world. Check in to your hotel and enjoy the evening exploring the streets and restaurants around your accommodation. Fes at night has a special atmosphere ancient, quiet, and full of history.
Overnight: Fes
Day 3: Fes Medina Tour – Middle Atlas – Azrou – Ziz Valley – Merzouga
Today is one of the fullest and most varied days of the entire tour. It starts in the ancient medieval streets of Fes and ends under the stars in the Sahara Desert.
The morning begins with a guided walking tour of the Fes old medina Fes el-Bali with a licensed local guide. The Fes medina is the largest car-free urban area in the world and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was founded in the 9th century and has barely changed since the medieval period. Walking through it feels like traveling back in time by a thousand years.
Your guide will take you to the famous Chouara Tannery the oldest working leather tannery in the world, where animal skins are still colored by hand using natural dyes made from plants and minerals. Looking down at the rows of colorful stone vats from a shop balcony above is one of the most iconic and unforgettable sights in all of Morocco.
You will also visit the stunning Al-Attarine Madrasa a 14th-century Islamic school whose interior is one of the finest examples of Moroccan craftsmanship anywhere in the country. The walls are covered floor to ceiling in hand-carved plaster, painted cedar wood, and tiny colorful mosaic tiles in endlessly complex patterns. Other stops include the old copper market, the spice souk, the ancient Al-Qarawiyyin Mosque founded in 859 AD, making it the oldest university in the world and the winding lanes of the medina itself, where every turn brings a new sight or smell.
After the Fes tour, you leave the city and head south through the Middle Atlas Mountains. The road climbs through green forests and quiet mountain villages. You pass through Ifrane, the clean mountain town with its European-style architecture and fresh mountain air — known as the Switzerland of Morocco and then through Azrou, where you stop at the cedar forest to see the wild Barbary macaque monkeys that live freely in the trees. These gentle and curious monkeys come right down to the roadside and are one of the most delightful and unexpected wildlife encounters in Morocco.
The road continues south through Midelt and then drops into the spectacular Ziz Valley a long winding gorge filled with thousands of date palm trees lining the banks of the Ziz River. The contrast between the bright green palms and the dry rocky mountains is one of the most beautiful views of the whole journey.
Late in the afternoon you arrive in Merzouga at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. The golden sand dunes rise up to 150 meters from the flat desert floor and stretch for kilometers across the horizon. After a quick freshen-up at your guesthouse, your camel guide is waiting.
You climb onto your camel and ride slowly and gently into the dunes as the sun begins to set. The colors shift from gold to orange to deep red. The Sahara is completely silent. There is no wind, no traffic, and no noise of any kind just the soft sound of the camel’s feet on the warm sand and the vast open sky above you.
You arrive at your traditional Berber desert camp as the last daylight fades. Dinner is served around a campfire, Berber musicians play traditional music, and above you the Sahara night sky fills with millions of stars. With no city lights for hundreds of kilometers, the Milky Way is clearly and brilliantly visible. It is one of the most beautiful things you will see in your entire life.
Overnight: Traditional Berber Desert Camp, Merzouga
Day 4: Sahara Sunrise – Merzouga – Todra Gorge – Dades Valley – Ouarzazate
Set your alarm early. Before sunrise, your guide will wake you and take you to climb a dune near the camp. As you reach the top, the horizon slowly brightens. The sky goes from black to deep blue to pink to gold. The silence of the Sahara at this hour is total and complete. The sunrise over the Erg Chebbi is one of the most peaceful and beautiful moments of the entire tour and one of the most memorable things you will experience in Morocco.
After the sunrise, ride the camels back to the guesthouse, take a hot shower, and enjoy a good breakfast. If you have a little extra time in the morning, you can try sandboarding down the dunes, take a short 4×4 tour into the deeper desert, or visit the small village of Khamlia nearby to hear the traditional Gnawa music played by the local community. These are all optional activities at a small extra cost.
After your morning in Merzouga, you begin the drive west. The first stop is Todra Gorge a narrow and dramatic canyon carved by the Todra River deep into the High Atlas Mountains. The canyon walls rise up to 300 meters on both sides and are only about 10 meters apart at the narrowest point. A clear shallow river runs along the bottom, and the cool air inside the gorge is a refreshing contrast to the warm desert you just left. Standing at the base of the towering rock walls and looking up is one of the most impressive natural experiences in Morocco.
After Todra Gorge you continue west through the Dades Valley one of the most beautiful drives in all of Morocco. The valley is wide and green, lined with rose gardens, almond trees, ancient kasbahs, and extraordinary red rock formations called the Dades Fingers twisted columns of rock that rise from the valley floor like giant stone hands. The road winds along the valley floor between these formations and the traditional Berber villages that sit among them.
In the late afternoon you arrive in Ouarzazate the film capital of Morocco and the gateway to the Sahara Desert. This city has hosted the production of some of the world’s biggest films because of its dramatic desert landscape and strong local film industry. You can take a short walk around the town, visit the old Taourirt Kasbah, or simply rest and have dinner before tomorrow’s final drive to Marrakech.
Overnight: Ouarzazate
Day 5: Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou – High Atlas Mountains – Marrakech
After breakfast on your final morning, you make one last very important stop before heading over the mountains to Marrakech. Just a short drive from Ouarzazate is Ait Ben Haddou one of the most beautiful and iconic places in all of Morocco.
Ait Ben Haddou is an ancient fortified village called a ksar built entirely from red mud and clay. It sits on a rocky hill above a dry river bed and has been inhabited for centuries by Berber families. It is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and has appeared in some of the world’s most famous films and TV shows, including Gladiator, Game of Thrones, The Mummy, and Lawrence of Arabia. When you walk through it, it is easy to see why filmmakers love it so much it is dramatic, ancient, and completely unlike anywhere else.
You will cross the dry river on stepping stones and enter the ksar through its old wooden gates. Inside, narrow lanes wind between tall mud-brick towers and old family homes. You climb higher and higher through the village until you reach the top, where a small ruined fortress gives you a panoramic view over the entire valley the river bed below, the palm trees in the distance, and the Anti-Atlas Mountains stretching away to the south. In the morning light, with the sun on the red walls, it is a truly stunning sight.
After Ait Ben Haddou, you begin the final drive to Marrakech crossing the High Atlas Mountains via the famous Tizi n’Tichka Pass. This mountain road climbs to over 2,200 meters above sea level and is one of the most dramatic and beautiful drives in Africa. The road winds through the mountains with wide views of deep valleys, sharp peaks, and small Berber villages clinging to the hillsides.
Along the way you can stop at roadside stalls selling argan oil, handmade crafts, and local honey from mountain beekeepers. These are real small family businesses and buying something even something small is a kind and meaningful way to support the local communities that live and work in these remote mountains.
As you come down the northern slopes of the High Atlas, the wide red plains of Marrakech open up below you. Palm trees appear. The city comes into view. After five incredible days traveling the length of Morocco, you arrive in Marrakech in the late afternoon.
Your driver will drop you at your hotel or riad, and your 5 Day Morocco Tour from Tangier comes to a perfect and memorable end. If you have time before your next flight or journey, the famous Jemaa el-Fnaa Square is alive every evening with food stalls, musicians, storytellers, and the irresistible energy that makes Marrakech one of the great cities of the world.
